Nancie West Swanberg

As a young artist, my focus was entirely in the fine arts of painting and printmaking. From earliest childhood I loved to draw. My art studies took me from LA to San Francisco and Stockholm, and I had the opportunity to have some very fine artist-teachers, including Richard Diebenkorn at San Francisco Art Institute.

As soon as I was out of art schools, I encountered the reality of being an artist and making a living. My first art job was designing a stage set for an operetta in Stockholm. Since that early start, I have worked in a wide range of illustration and design, including book and magazine illustration, architectural illustration, hidden picture/jigsaw puzzles, calendars and greeting cards. And for many years, including currently, I have been doing design for etched (sandblasted) and kiln glass.

Throughout my life I have been first and foremost a painter primarily using oil on canvas. I went from abstraction to abstract figuration to photo realism and surrealism and back to abstraction. All the while I have been concurrently painting commissioned portraits and landscapes, and have exhibited both paintings and photography. In the 1990s I did a large group of paintings called The Lunchbreak Series, which was exhibited at San Francisco City Hall, as well as the Galleria Design Center and many other venues. Locally I have shown paintings and photographs for many years at Gallery One in Petaluma, CA.

My website introduces you to my wide range of works from a lifetime of art endeavor. Some of the paintings and prints are available for exhibition and purchase. I also continue to do commissioned works. Your inquiries and comments are welcome.

I have currently embarked on an entirely new direction in my painting. These mixed media, abstract paintings with figural elements, are currently a work in progress. Some of the new works will be added to this website later in the season.
